online music player and music discovery Web site
All of the functions in the player are based on first-hand interviews with MOG's self-identified listener base. The player seamlessly integrates the two primary listening modes uncovered in the research: a “background mode” for use while performing other tasks (usually work), and a “discovery mode” where the listener is actively engaged in finding new music.
While player usage contexts vary, album and artist information on the Web site are always part of a discovery process. The information architecture and page layout encourage sampling and exploration of similar artists, while supporting deep dives for artists and albums that catch the listener’s fancy.
Disclosure: MOG's visual designer refined the player interface after I'd finished my engagement, in order to accommodate changes in licensing requirements and technical feasibility. My product management partner provided valuable and ongoing assistance with interviews, brainstorming, and working through tricky interaction problems.
